We need to learn and grow in our trust in God

I read an interesting statement in my Bible reading from Psalm 131.  Verse 2 reads, “I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.”  The picture is of a child sitting contentedly in its mother’s lap.  This is in contrast to a nursing child who does not sit so contentedly because when the child is with its mother it wants milk.  It thinks of its mother primarily as the one who feeds it, and constantly demands, sometimes very loudly and persistently, to be fed.  It cannot sit still because when it thinks of its mother it thinks of food.  But as the child matures its thinking matures and it enjoys its mother for who she is, not simply for what she provides.  And this is the place we all must grow to in our relationship with God.  It is an immature faith that demands that God provide for me when I want and what I want or else I kick and scream.  We need to learn and grow in our trust in God and in our relationship with Him.  Then we can sit quietly in His presence even though everything in our world is not in order because having God is enough.
