Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Pastor's Ponderings >>

When we think of the tragedy unfolding in Japan, we are so thankful to be living in Canada where earthquakes and tsunamis are rare.  Yes, the Lord has blessed us here.

In my Bible reading this week I came across Deuteronomy 7:7-8 and 9:5 where Moses reminded Israel of their blessings in contrast to the people of the land they were entering.  God was going to use Israel to destroy those ungodly nations so His people could possess their good land, cities, vineyards etc.

But Israel was warned not to get a "big head" about it all.  This was not happening because they were a better people or more righteous or by their own strength.  In fact God told them they were a stiff-necked people and without Him they could not win any battles.  It was happening because God be His own sovereign choosing, power, and grace was making it happen.

So too, we owe none of our blessings to being smarter, better, or more righteous, than other people.  It is all because of God's goodness and mercy.  Romans 11:25 says, "God has bound all men over to disobedience so that He might have mercy on them all."  It is only because of God's mercy and grace that we are not facing some sort of devastation.

This calls for humble thankfulness and compassion, not superior pride of any sort.
