History
Beginnings
In 1959, there were no Baptist churches in the east end of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Seeing the need in the area, a number of dedicated people began investing in the Kingdom of God. Jarvis Steet Baptist Church sent one of their Toronto Baptist Seminary stundents to begin the work, with help from Essex Baptist and Walkerville Baptist churches.
Lindsay Howan, a native of New Zealand, began visiting homes in the area and inviting people to meet at the Riverside Town Hall on Sunday mornings and in homes for singing in the evening. This group eventually officially organized as Riverside Baptist Church.
Pastor Howan eventually left to minister elsewhere, but returned for our 50th Anniversary services in June 2009, bringing the Word of God and many memories to mind.
Recent Pastors
Wayne Shih 1987-2006
Rev. Wayne Shih began his ministry at Riverside in 1987 as youth pastor, and was senior pastor from 1993 to 2006. He met his wife, Maureen, at the University of Waterloo, and they were married in 1985. They have three children, David, Michael and Kristen.
After receiving an engineering degree from the University of Waterloo, Wayne went to Heritage/London Baptist Seminary (Master of Divinity). He also graduated from Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary (Master of Theology).
Current Activities
Pastor Shih finished his ministry at Riverside at the end 2006, as he felt God leading him to start a new daughter church.
This new work is in it's early stages and is planned to remain a "house church", meeting only in small groups in member's houses. Rather then having as a goal to grow as a single group to the point that a traditional church requires a dedicated building, growth in numbers would result in the group splitting and forming more house churches.
